What is SEO?
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is as important to a website as quality content. After all, no one is going to know how great your content is if they cannot find it! If you do not have the content, or are just starting out in the online world, you may not consider search engine optimization that important; but if you are running a website for an online business or have been online for some time, SEO is paramount to your site's success. What you need is a full service SEO plan to maximize your return on investment.

A successful SEO strategy involves both on-site and off-site optimization. Though these techniques are drastically different, they are used together to fashion an overall successful campaign.
On-Site SEO
On-site SEO includes effective meta tag keywords, on-page keyword use, URL and title optimization, and more. All of these functions are handled on the site to be optimized, so they all stem from the same URL - your primary domain name. Directory structure, internal linking, and other considerations can make a huge difference in search engine placement if handled correctly.

Off-Site SEO
Off-site optimization includes garnering inbound links (or link building), press releases, article submission, and more. As the name suggests, these matters are usually handled off-site, though not necessarily on, or from, another site. Newsletters and e-mail, and even live telephone customer service, are other examples of off-site optimization.
Google places is another: By placing your website and/or business in Google Places under the appropriate headings, it becomes far easier for potential customers to locate. As phonebooks are used less and less, this can make all the difference in a customer's choosing your business or a competitor's.
Link building is one of the most important concerns of off-site optimization and there are several ways to cull inbound links. Directory submissions are still a good way to build links, for example. Press releases and article submissions are often picked up by numerous sites aside from the ones to which they are submitted. Reciprocal linking is not only good for traffic, but also for developing and fostering relations within the community of like-minded sites, newsgroups, and social networks. These are only a few of the methods used.
Microsites are another off-site technique for building links. Microsites are compact, but complete, websites focused on a single subject, product, service, or aspect of a larger topic. Microsites are more than just "link farms," but they are not full-fledged websites and do not require the maintenance actual websites demand. In many cases, a large website can be broken-down into several microsites, all of which point back to the original domain, serving several purposes at once.
